Mr. Chetan L. Hanchate considers information dissemination and percolation of technical knowledge in grass root level entrepreneurs in remote & rural areas is also very important as he understands that in India... if we train food producers for pre & post harvest handling & value addition activities and help them to aquire skills to add value or stabilise them so that food & nutritional losses are avoided.
He also feels important that creating small food processing units at food production areas backed with good marketing linkages will help them to grow over the years so that 100s or 1000s of such mini primary processing & value addition centres will grow into medium scale industries with regular input of technical services.
It is with this views he associated on a regular basis with many leading NGO centres who are striving to offer entrepreneurship among rural areas and sought his most practical technical services to crystallise adoptable & practiceble products in appropriate scale of operation & compatible packaging.
Some of his association have been described below,
As mentioned above he associated with few leading NGO centre’s during his networking in the professional life and rendered very useful services in rural & remote areas. Assisting and working with needy and underprivileged is one of its high interest and passionate area; as he feels that the services rendered to such people and making their life beautiful and happy is something like God’s work and he gets delighted when he sees the happiness among those to whom he helped.
He undertakes assignments very selectively for a stipulated time from his professional life and renders help mainly through leading NGOs who are firm, reputed, well rooted for their real time, demonstrable works so that he is assured that the efforts he puts in will reach to the needy with full strength and results are seen on a real time basis. He has acquired excellent skills in training, demo implementing, empowering and imparting skills at grass root level with full impact and he is known and recognized among NGO centers for such passionate and high quality works. CPF associated with them as the Board and Managing Trustees were highly skilled, empowered having extremely good track record and career path and most of them were off shoot of Rudseti which is one of the leading training institutions inIndia.
Here Mr. Chetan L. Hanchate coined a new concept of “Group Enterprises” among rural, illiterate & underprivileged women community which comprised of few forward looking, fully empowered SHGs to form Group Enterprises in food processing and in 4 districts we formed about 25 groups comprising of many SHGs and for each group we offered full fledged information’s, trainings, techniques and hands on experience in production of food products (one category of products for one group) in a designated premises by using locally available produce.
The facility created complied to all the pre requisites of food industry norms and licenses and such facilities produced high quality of a pool / basket full of different processed foods products with professional packaging and labelling. We trained them to market these products through their weekly Market days and also to neighbouring village market days and further trained them to take it to nearest district head quarters and then to cities successfully.
As the chain of activity went on large the good quantities of production started from these profit making groups we realised that marketing would become more challenging hence formed an exclusive marketing agency for their products in Bangalore called Gramya with full time sales and marketing dedicated team to promote and distribute it to the retail chains which offered further momentum to make all these ladies earn more than what they were earning before joining the said concept of Group Enterprise Activity. CPFs Contribution : CPF associated with great passion with this NGO as CPF felt that the impact of our work will go in great depth to poor and needy dwellers of island. Mr. Chetan L. Hanchate initially focussed on imparting training to several poor tribal and farming families and small time fishing families in all the areas of Andaman’s by offering very innovative and high quality Sea food based – Prawn, fish, lobsters pickles and chutneys packed in very attractive packaging which gained immense popularity in the Island market and also when it was shipped to Kolkata and Chennai markets gained very good momentum.
All these products were made by the extensively trained ladies at a food business incubator facility in North Andaman’s and in Port Blair, both places housed all the food processing equipments, lab facility etc. Due to good popularity of the sea food pickled products, the training demand came from Nicobar Islanders also and we immediately conducted similar skill trainings on same said products at various deep islands of Nicobars. These islanders were also trained on fish and prawns drying methods and very good fillets were produced from air dried freshly caught fishes.Later on Unnati continued to avail our services and we identified many other crops which were abundantly grown in A&N islands and offered training to many other networked SHGs in converting them into value added products while offering training and skills to sell them to tourists etc. Over 50 products were started producing at various pockets of A&N islands with professional packing and these products were of high quality and low in costs which helped consumers in the islands to forgo buying high cost products which were imported from main landIndia. This is how a cluster of food processing units were established in A&N islands and all of them have now grown to sizeable units producing regularly topical products on which they are trained. All of them are now self sustaining and functioning on their own with funds managed at their SHGs. This is how food processing activities were revolutionised in A&N for the first time.
Mr. Chetan L. Hanchate also associated with Prince of Nicobar islands for set up a food processing unit to mfr. prawns and fish based pickles exclusively for exports purposes namely M/s.Nicobari Food Productsin a shed offered by DIC free of cost for the activity.Currently CPF is assisting Mr. Mohammed to set up a demonstration cum production unit for exclusive mfg. of coconut based products in Port Blair.Mr. Chetan L. Hanchate travelled about 50 times to A&N to make this happen and he took very special interest to crystallise with a reason that the raw materials available were of very high quality and organic in nature and the Passion of Mr. Mohammad which is appreciable and I always fascinated by his hard work put in to organise all these activities. The Commission IAS was highly impressed with me about the kind of works implanted in A&N and appreciated profusely for the contribution extended in upliftment of the livelihood in under privileged population in theIslands.

OUTREACH - Association of Volunteers for Rural Development, Bangalore – 560043 www.outreachindia.org
Outreach was established in 1993 in response to the needs of communities living in drought prone areas in southIndiaand also to the growing need for training in the Ngo sector and within government. The idea was to focus on small NGOs working in drought prone regions in south India , particularly those engaged in the natural resource management type of activities such as wasteland development, micro-watershed development, forestry & heir capability’s and effectiveness as development organizations. An important objective of OUTREACH was also to develop more effective interfacing between Non-Governments organizations (NGOs) and Government Organizations (GOs), especially those working in drought-prone areas. In order to demonstrate how the quality of life of poor communities living in these areas could be enhanced, OUTREACH established 8 direct projects and the same time linked up with a number of small NGOs who were also involved in addressing the issue of poverty in drought-prone regions.
The main thrust of the approach is the development of local initiative in the form of self help groups (SHGS), primarily women, enabling them to restore and manage economic activates also play a major role in the OUTEACH approach .the SHGs save &manage credit and at the same time take up integrated micro-watershed development activities thereby improving their primary production base. Non –land-based economic activates which follow the land-based ones help ones help to deflect pressure on the natural resources in the habitat.
This approach is actively promoted by OUTREACH among other NGOs and Governments projects working in similar regions of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. Partner NGOs are part of a network consisting of five regional clusters in the Rayalseema (Chittoor, Cuddapah and Anantapur) region of Andhra Pradesh, Dharmapuri district in Tamil Nadu and Bidar & Bijapur districts in northern Karnataka. Technical and managerial backup to NGO partners, specifically in the areas of community organization, saving & credit management natural resources management basic project administration and accounts & financial management are offered.
This has led to its establishment as one leading non – governmental development organisations in south India. Primarily, the organisations has been able to established a good standing with the governments donor organisations NGOs & other institutes working in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu and Karnataka and other parts of India
CPFs Contribution : Mr. Chetan L. Hanchate associated with Outreach in formulating various skill training programs relating to agro processing and food products making and conducted about 50 training sessions in various villages, interior parts of Karnataka & Temilnadu. We also networked with their farming members and studied the agricultural practices being followed and crops being grown and offered them our expert advices on pest and insecticide and fertilizer usage during crop growing and practices to be followed during post harvest management of the produce. Various new crops for potential also were suggested which possibly earns better remuneration per given farm. The follow up actions were carried out by Outreach to fructify them into mini home and small scale operations and sought guidance to run and manage such activities.
Mr. Chetan L. Hanchate offered over 70 products skill training to all these low end SHGs mainly among women’s who hailed from very poor and underprivileged society. I learnt later that many SHGs prospered greatly with such activities and developed a good market base and there after few of them split into individual entrepreneurs operating on their own. CPF is not very much associate with them currently as there has been no demand from their end for our continued services.
Gramya TS Pvt ltd is the dedicated marketing organisation for providing marketing support to products of SHGs and the small producers. Synergy to Solutions (S-2-S) provides services to NGOs and CBOs on management development and mentoring. Cumulatively IDF and its linked organisations have a workforce of about 700.Institutions of poor: IDF has promoted and is mentoring five Women SHG Federations, Two Women Artisan Federations and one each of Small, Marginal, Oral Lessee Farmers Federation, Tribal farmers Society and a Paddy- Ragi Producers collective.
